Who's in your in-home caregiver rolodex?!

I’m in my 40’s reflecting back on 8 years of hiring babysitters and nannies.  It’s had its ups and downs, and there were many lessons I learned along the way.  One of those hard and humbling lessons was that our family basically needs a cued up and ready rolodex of several babysitters, or nannies looking for extra hours, at any given time.

With my husband being a busy physician and all, having a cadre of support makes more than sense.  But deep down I still fight with feelings of being a slacker, spoiled mom who can’t just seem to make due with… I don’t know… one occasional babysitter?

The thing is, I’ve learned that the nature of babysitters and temp nanny work truly does come and go, and not necessarily for negative reasons.  People graduate from school and move away, nannies become grandmas for example and their priorities change, and that all makes sense. 

Given the come-and-go nature of ad-hoc in-home assistance it’s hard to gain stability for more than 3-4 months sometimes.  I’m mildly embarrassed to say we may have worked with up to 15 babysitters in one year due mostly to the natural churn I described above.

This is not a great situation for anyone… the kids, the parents, making sure you are checking all the appropriate, safe pre-screening boxes…

But so many of us parents are in this situation, frantically searching on large, impersonal carefinder sites and slapping up a post and a prayer on the local babysitter facebook every few months.
