Nanny agencies are generally very good at helping to set good, clear expectations for the role of in-home caregivers like nannies and caregivers.
For direct childcare hours: the primary role of the caregiver is to take developmentally appropriate, safe, and engaged care of children who are under their watch. Other duties of the caregiver may include light meal preparation and clean up for the child and tidying up after child-related messes happening on the shift are.
For Family Assistant hours: these are hours that can be requested for tasks unrelated to direct childcare. Household tasks like laundry, family meal preparation, cleaning or putting away family dishes, running family errands, or pet care are all considered Family Assistant tasks.
A good rule of thumb is for child-related care hours caregivers take care of children and child-related cleanups. And, the key is always communicating expectations as a parent and being clear on the caregiver’s role (above).
